Originally organized in 1999, Sterling Main Street became the dream and dedication of a small group of Sterling business owners and community leaders. Working for many years to bring the Sterling Main Street Program to Sterling, their hard work and vision was finally rewarded when in March of 2009 they received the official accreditation from the Illinois Main Street Program. In addition, that same year, Sterling Main Street relocated their office to their amazing renovation project of 4 years, The Martin Building, located on the corner of 3rd Street and Locust.

Sterling Main Street is a non-profit organization that works to promote a growing, thriving, and prosperous business community in Sterling's downtown district. We continue with our goal of achieving a responsible balance between historic preservation and economic development, inviting all businesses, organizations, and residents to become a partner as we continue to improve the heart and soul of our city.

Today, Sterling Main Street continues to work with Illinois Main Street as well as utilizing the National Main Street Center's Four-Point Approach to downtown revitalization. This approach is based on a comprehensive strategy, tailored to local needs and opportunities in four broad areas:

Design
Organization
Promotion
Economic Resturcturing
Design enhances the physical appearance of downtown by encouraging improvement projects such as historic building rehabilitation, streetscapes, and storefront revitalization.
Organization builds a unity among the many groups and individuals who have a role in the revitalization process.
Promotion works to create excitement downtown. Street festivals, parades, and retail events are some of the ways Main Street encourages new customers, investors, businesses, and visitors.
Economic Restructuring strengthens the downtowns economic base by assisting and recruiting businesses and finding new uses for underused space.
